Everything You Need to Know About Getting Started with Robotic Mowing

Updated: Dec 30, 2022

Robotic mowing is becoming increasingly popular as an efficient, low-maintenance way to maintain a lawn. Robotic mowers are automated machines that are programmed to move around the lawn, cutting grass with small retractable blades. They are powered by a battery, and move autonomously around the lawn in random patterns. Statisclly, the robot will mow all spots of the property keeping a “always cut” look. Robotic mowers provide a low-maintenance solution for lawn care. They can be programmed to mow at specific times (night or rain). When deciding whether or not to invest in a robotic mower, there are a few things to consider.

First, the size of your lawn. Robotic mowers are priced based on the batteries capacity to handle a set amount of acres. For example a Husquvarna mower that does under .4 acres retails for $1,400, while Husqvarnas 1.25 acre mower retails for above $3,000. If the property is optimal for a robotic mower this could be a investment to seriously consider. Infact companies like AOS, are leasing out machines to mitigate the upfront expense.

Second, properties need to be optimal for the technology. The ideal layout would be perfectly flat, no obstructions and the lawn completely connected. Obviously this isn't realistic for most properties, however the closer to this description, the less “landscape edits” will be required. Common edits include filling holes, removing tree stumps and filling any edges between the mulch and grass.

Third, its recommended to consult a professional. Picking a robotic mower is not a “one size fits all” solution. By consulting a professional, they can point out different variables that may effect performance. From this evaluation they can help pick a mower and plan a optimal installation.

Robotic mowing can be a great solution for busy homeowners who want to maintain their lawn without having to spend hours each week mowing. By taking the time to understand the basics of robotic mowing and investing in the right mower for your yard, you can get started on the path to a low-maintenance, well-maintained lawn.
